The Unused Epigraphs (Part 1)

One of the things I was just asked for (at time of writing) was an epigraph for my novel, Falling for the Protagonist. I was also asked for my dedication and acknowledgments. Writing and submitting the acknowledgments was probably the closest I’ve come to being able to internalize the truth of being published. For a very long time, I held up “writing an Acknowledgments page” as some beacon of publishing, the thing that—above all else—would say to me, “Hey, Bex. You did it. You’ve made it.”

Needless to say, that was a big moment for me.

But I didn’t ever plan on putting an epigraph into my book. For those who don’t know:

Epigraph (N) – [in the context of books/literature specifically] A motto or quotation, as at the beginning of a literary composition, setting forth a theme

Still, the very mention of one sent my brain down the path of What If. As I found it fun to think about, I decided to come up with some quotes (and ask my friends as well). Since I never plan to “publish” the quotes we came up with, I decided to post them here for anyone who is interested. First, just the quotes. If you want to stop there, read the book, and decide for yourself what relevance these quotes have—cool. In fact, I’m supposed to encourage you to do that, I guess. I mean… other people buying and/or reading the book is important to me.

In fact, I think I’m going to make this a preorder hype post. Yeah, that’s what I’ve decided. Support my dream!

But if you don’t care to do that, also cool. Or if you want to read the whole post, including my explanation, before reading the book, also totally cool. In short: Everything is cool. I don’t control you. I don’t even know you. Your autonomy is safe, and I shall never attempt to trample over your right to make choices for yourself!

The rest of this post will be about Quote 1 because this post is so long that I already had to scroll up and add “Part 1” to the title. Part 2 will be about the rest of the quotes. Hopefully. May have to add a Part 3.

Tim O’Brien wrote fiction about the horrors of the Vietnam War. I wrote a satirical romance novel about a woman who falls into a book and sends the main character into an existential crisis. These two things are not the same. But I will always remember my students’ shock, back when I was an (inept) English teacher, and I told them that The Things They Carried was fiction. I believe I told them before we started reading the book, but I felt a reminder was in order after they’d gotten through a chunk of it. They simply could not believe that what they had read was made up. It was so real! It felt like nonfiction! It led to some great discussions about the power that fiction has to help us hold up a mirror to real life. Fiction helps us confront and interact with truth. It’s sort of like how standup comics help people face reality by getting them to laugh at themselves. There are lenses through which we can observe ourselves and others. I wanted to use my work of fiction to do just that.

Just look at the (simplified) definition of satire I used to help my students understand it: Satire is used to highlight a flaw in order to raise awareness and/or incite change.

One of my main goals in writing FFtP was to draw attention to a glaring issue with real life: We are not treated to other people’s internal monologues, but some people still act like their motivations should be crystal clear. Some of the things that men pull off in romance novels would get men a face full of pepper spray in real life. Why? Because, in a book, the narrator is constantly letting us know, “Hey. Don’t worry. Both parties are totally on board with this.”

I am going to write out a summary of a very real novel in my own words. TRIGGER WARNING: Kidnapping, forced imprisonment, threats of sexual violence

After discovering the man she just married is a murderer with a history of criminal dealings, Holly Bardwell flees the marriage and the man in the dead of night. Her car breaks down somewhere in the Colorado Rockies, so she finds herself wandering through the mountains on foot, only to pass out in the snow outside a hunting lodge. One of the owners of the lodge, Adam Colter, discovers Holly and brings her inside. He nurses her back to health and introduces her to the co-owners of the lodge, his younger brothers, Ethan and Ryan. While Holly was unconscious, the three brothers decided that Holly was the one for them. For all of them. When Holly attempts to leave their (otherwise unoccupied) remote mountain lodge, they stop her and carry her back inside while she begs to be let go. Then they tell her the truth—that they all intend to marry the same woman, and they have agreed that she is to be that woman. She will pleasure all of them. Carry their children. Be wife to all of them. It’s okay that they just met her twelve hours ago, because they know in their guts that she is meant to belong to them. She won’t ever have to worry about a thing because they’re gonna take real good care of her. She doesn’t have to leave. They don’t want her to leave. She’s going to belong to them forever.

How’s that going for you? I want you to know that you saw a Trigger Warning at the top of the paragraph that wasn’t there before I wrote the summary. I realized on rereading it that I should go back and add the TW. Because that summary was missing one very important line at the end:

Holly listens to the brothers explain how they want her to be their wife and live with them forever, and she is totally into it.

Yeah, this is the plot of Colters’ Woman by Maya Banks. It’s an erotic romance, not a thriller. Note the apostrophe placement in the title. Their last name is Colter, not Colters. She is all of their woman. And she loves it. She can’t wait to marry these three dudes and bang it out for the rest of their lives.

Changes the cadence a bit, doesn’t it?

Romance gives readers a chance to explore scenarios that would feel unsafe in real life because the narrator is there to say, “Yep. Totally into it.”

But what happens in real life when Person A thinks they’re in a romance and Person B doesn’t? Suddenly, the story is different. Now you’re looking at a person who feels entitled to another person’s attention, maybe even their affection. How the story progresses depends entirely on how Person A takes rejection, if they take it at all. Maybe Person A refuses to believe the rejection. Maybe they believe the rejection, but respond with anger or violence.

When only one person approaches an interaction as romantic, the entire interaction is anything but.

In my book, I wanted to highlight this entitlement, the way that an interaction can take on whole new layers of meaning when there is a disparity in the way the participants are experiencing it.

Yes, I wrote a fictional novel. But I wanted to use that fiction to showcase a piece of reality, namely that women (or anybody, really) can feel unsafe in a situation without ever being overtly threatened. They can feel unsafe even if the other person has absolutely no unsavory intentions at all. Because they are not privy to the inner monologue of this other person.

There are no narrators in real life.

By the way, I’m not the only one who noticed this strangely thin line between romance and horror! Check out this ingenious trailer for Red Eye (2005). Link included because the embedded video might not work.

I never saw the movie, because I’m not into the thriller/slasher/horror genre, but the trailer stuck with me, clearly. It perfectly encapsulates the disparity delineated above.

Nick DiRamio also showcased how easily an interaction in a romantic movie could be changed from romantic to creepy/horrific. All they did was change the background music. That’s all it took. I’m going to link to the video at the timestamp where this happens, but I do highly recommend watching the whole thing. Nick is hilarious.

This all led me to Tim O’Brien. He was my first thought when the idea of epigraphs entered my mind. His quotes about fiction are all top-notch. Yes, the book is made up. But there is reality reflected in the fiction.

Mysterious Mobile Misogyny

This post is definitely going to be a non-sequitur considering my last one was like, “Yay I have a literary agent!” And then the post ended with a rejection factory? I guess I was trying to temper expectations, but I think I just did a bummer, so… sorry for doing a bummer. Suffice it to say, I still have a literary agent, and things are happening. I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about those things yet, so I’m being cautious. But they are good things.

In the meantime! You are not gonna believe the trigger warnings for this post, but I promise they are real and should be heeded.

I play a lot of stupid little iPhone games while I’m going about my day-to-day, and often these games are free with ads or they offer bonuses if you “watch” an ad. Since I usually have the games running while I’m doing something else, I tend to just “watch” the ads. Whatever.

Except… I noticed a terrifying trend. You may have seen this yourself at some point. A woman who is either pregnant or has a child (or both!) gets kicked out by her husband/boyfriend/??? and has to suddenly walk uphill in the snow against the wind to find a dilapidated shack in the middle of nowhere to survive and raise her child(ren) in. Then the ad implies only You can save these women by matching three things or merging two things or pulling a pin out of a thing. Often, the ads feature the women literally kneeling as if in supplication as they beg You (the viewer) for help. I took screenshots to help underline my point, so again I urge you to look at the Trigger Warnings above.

There are so many things wrong with this ad trend that I am going to fall back on a classic Internet tool: The Numbered List (Number 1 may surprise you!)

1. This is not the game…
Look, you saw the title of this post. You know I’m getting there. Just give me a second to get to feminism. I want to start with the more practical stuff.

One of the things that baffles me about mobile game ads (and something that many other people have pointed out) is that they very rarely show actual gameplay. It goes further than that, though! It’s about regulations. It’s about the fact that they’re not required to show actual gameplay. Occasionally, Candy Crush will put “Not actual gameplay” or something similar in teeeeeny tiny font at the bottom of the screen, but no one else does!

It goes further again! These are all different games! Look at this:


If you play mobile games, this image may be familiar to you. Like me, you may be so used to seeing this woman and this little girl being desperate for warmth that it doesn’t even occur to you that the above image is not from the game you’re thinking of. More likely, you’re thinking of this game:


No. Regulations.

I’ve thought about this and thought about this. I have put more thought into these ads than the people making them. They don’t deserve to live rent-free in my head, yet here we are. Not only are the games blatantly plagiarizing each other, but the ads are copied and pasted. If I were any good at research, I would look into the ad companies, not the games. I wonder if all these games farm out their ads to the same company, or if ad companies are copying each other. I have literally seen ads for Royal Match one day that suddenly have a character from Toon Blast in them the next. Literally the same ad, just a bear from Toon Blast subbed in for the king from Royal Match. To add insult to injury, the “level” portrayed in the ad does not accurately represent the gameplay or imagery in either game.

And there’s also this:

Sometimes the mom in this ad is a completely different woman (the green-haired woman who is the actual mother in the game being advertised), and I think the Black woman above is from a different game from the same company. They just swapped the two female characters out for some reason??

People say (I think) that the reason there are no regulations is that a lot of these game and/or ad companies are outside the U.S. To this I say, the Internet has existed for a long time. Probably over ten years, at a guess. It’s time to maybe start thinking about how to address internet issues, domestic and international, with something other than: “It’s the internet…” *shrug*

Also…

2. I didn’t agree to see this sh*t

For every horrifying image I posted above, there are a hundred I didn’t dare screenshot or post here because they are literally too horrific to share. I don’t even want to put the words together that would describe them. But I kind of have to, so… REMEMBER THE TRIGGER WARNINGS, but know that there will be no images accompanying this section.

“ASMR” games that involve pustules and the lancing thereof. Foot fungus. Ingrown nails.

“Hospital” games that involve miscarriage and/or stillbirth, including little baby ghosts flying out of their mothers.

Surgery on children while their parents weep and wait for the outcome.

A starving baby cow trying desperately to suck on the frozen udder of its mother, who has frozen to death.

A woman being assaulted by her husband, getting shoved into a glass table, and lying on the floor while blood pools around her head. (She later wakes up in a body bag.)

Pregnant women being physically assaulted by their partner. Yes, you read that right. Pregnant women (plural) because multiple games have ads that feature visibly pregnant women being physically attacked. (In at least one case, this scene precedes yet another version of the pregnant woman fighting her way through a blizzard towards an abandoned shack.)

I. Did. Not. Sign. Up. For. This.*

Just because they are cartoons does not mean they can’t be morbid, horrifying, unsettling, triggering, or any combination thereof.

In a world where sane people are starting to realize that it’s best to include warnings for sensitive content, and where more and more literal children** are playing on their or their parents’ phones, we have ads for sex games popping up on our phones. We have ads with horrific medical maladies or imagery that makes you want to retch. No warning. No way to report ads (in some cases) or request not to see certain ones again. This is number 2 on the list, but it might make me the most livid. Well, maybe it’s tied with the misogyny bit. Speaking of…

*Your counterargument may be that I did sign up for this by agreeing to watch an ad and/or play a game that is free with ads, but I would argue there’s a certain expectation of censorship for an ad that can have literally any audience. Ads are regulated in other contexts. You don’t go to see PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie and expect to see a preview for Cocaine Bear.

**I don’t disapprove of children playing on phones or tablets; this is an outdated criticism of “kids these days” and/or their parents. I don’t limit my screen time, so why would I limit my child’s? I also don’t think it’s up to an ad company to regulate content my child sees. Screen time should be supervised. But things happen, don’t they? We do our best.

3. Okay, it’s time for the feminism now.

Look, I’m not saying men come off great in these ads. They are often cheating on the “protagonist” of the ad, or they are abusive. At the very least, they are inattentive and unsupportive. That’s not a great look. But… I still need to point out that not one of these ads features a man kneeling before you, desperate for you to solve a puzzle correctly so he can avoid dying of exposure.

Strangely enough, when the ad includes an animated hand doing the puzzle (usually poorly, so that you will be so infuriated by the incompetence that you’ll download the game just so you can do it better), it often is a well-manicured uh… female-presenting hand?

So one thing I will say is they’re not explicitly sending the message that only men can save these women and children. In fact, in the lore of the ad, men are the ones who put them in that situation in the first place. Damn men. Always making their exes live in shacks in the middle of the tundra.

But (I’m saying “but” a lot, I know) they sure are saying these women are helpless without a man in their lives. The equations they present are:

Woman + Man = Home With Working Heat and Electricity

Woman – Man = Living in Squalor

I cannot stress this enough: This isn’t what the game is about. These scenes aren’t featured in the games. Or not all of them anyway. They are explicitly using this as a marketing technique, or worse (somehow) using it as a marketing technique because they’re copying someone else who used it as a marketing technique. Again, the frustration stems from not being able to do anything about this. Some ads have a button to report them for one reason or another, but I swear some of them do not have such a button. Even if they did, I’m not sure a complaint would change anything. Sure, I could rate the app one star for its ads alone. That would accomplish… nothing. These games have thousands of reviews. New reviews will have no effect.

And there isn’t enough space here to complain about how much real money these games push for on a regular basis.

It’s free! All you have to do is pay money to unlock it!

Maybe I will look into these ads a little more for another post, figure out the who, what, when, where, and why of it all. It sure does make me mad.

At least now I can finally delete all these screenshots from my phone.

Oops! Not Feminist

Hey. I’m back. Let’s pretend I’ve been blogging for the last three years, okay? But if you’re curious: In my farewell post on November 8th, 2018, I said I would go back to blogging if my YA novel, Hellbound, ever got published. Don’t get your hopes up. It’s not being published… by a publisher. But it is being published by me. So I figured I’d share a little bit of the process.

A couple things have happened in my life. My second child, Ari, was born last August.

He’s doing well. Warren is now four years old, but is also somehow ten feet tall. I’m teaching virtual English and reviewing podcasts on Twitter (@BexGoos). And I also have my own podcast that I do with my husband (called Not Again!). Yeah… a lot going on.

So Hellbound. I decided to self-publish after I realized that going the traditional publishing route with this book was probably never going to happen. Even though I wrote it before Lucifer, and The Good Place, and the Hellboy remake… well, that’s all people will see now. Plus, people will probably lump this in with all those fallen angel novels that were popular for a while. For this and many other reasons, I decided to self-publish. With that in mind, I set out to reread Hellbound for the first time in years. And… yikes.

This is not me being self-deprecating, okay? I am genuinely surprised that an editor wanted to get this published at one point. The story is okay, but the writing… you can tell I wrote it when I was nineteen (twenty?). It’s quite juvenile. On top of that, I realized that I unconsciously wrote the novel as a brainwashed drone of the patriarchy. There were so many problematic aspects, and I actually had the gall to consider myself a feminist at the time.

I considered the book itself to be a feminist work! So I updated it as best as I could. The first thing I had to do was pull back on the patriarchal nonsense. Then I had to modernize it because a lot has changed in ten years. I find this stuff fascinating. Maybe I’m the only one? I’m just gonna list the things that had to change to address both of the aforementioned issues. The book will be on sale later this month!

To make it more feminist…

  • Original: The two godlike deities that were echoes of humanity were both men. (I was like “Oo one of them is gay! Edgy!” God, twenty-year-old, me. Shut up.) Now: Tor remains male (as far as all-powerful godlike entities can have sex or gender). His sister Lux is a gay woman (Though, again, she is an all-powerful godlike being; she’s probably pretty open-minded when it comes to relationships).
  • Original: Almost every woman who gave birth to a Re-du-Tor died in childbirth. Tor would literally just kill women with his penis. And I never once thought, “Should women be considered disposable?” Now: It’s a fluke that Aiden’s mother died in childbirth. All the other women who gave birth to Res-du-Tor “prayed” for such an encounter, seeing it as kind of an honor. Like being visited by a deity. It’s not a perfect fix, but I had to work with what my idiot younger self gave me.
  • Original: I specifically noted that Aiden’s sister in her hellhound form looked “sleek and female.” Please be careful about rolling your eyes too hard. They might get stuck that way. Now: I took that piece of description out. Good Lord. I just deleted it. After I unstuck my eyes from being rolled back in my head.
  • Original: Tor (Aiden’s father) had created some kind of replica or clone of Aiden’s mother? It was because he loved her and couldn’t stand the idea of letting her go, but the question of her free will was one that I did not give more than a second’s thought to. Now: I made her more of a shade than a clone, and I implied she existed because of her own will mixed with Tor’s love and loneliness. I also made it clear that Tor couldn’t actually touch her or be physically intimate with her. Again, not perfect, but… I worked with what I had.
  • This doesn’t quite fall under the umbrella of feminism, but it still is important to admit how many subconscious biases were ingrained in me. I used to have a line that Nicolette looked like an “angel” with her “blonde hair and blue eyes.” I thought nothing of it for so long. And then one day, I reread it (this was actually years ago), and I was like… wait… Am I saying that I am pro-Aryan race? My grandfather was a Holocaust survivor for Pete’s sake! So I took that part out.

To modernize it…

  • I removed all mention of Facebook, though I had to keep in some form of social media site. So I just made one up called ConnectMe. ConnectMe will never become obsolete because it doesn’t exist. Fun Fact: I reused it for a different book that will likely never see the light of day.
  • I removed all mention of asking for directions and replaced it with using an app.
  • I had to change Elysia’s alarm clock (yes, a physical alarm clock) to her phone.
  • No one looks for the time anywhere other than their phone now, although I think they might still look at a clock if they are in a classroom.
  • I removed some mention of listening to the radio since a lot of cars have Bluetooth or USB hookups for phones now. I know some people still listen to the radio, but it’s rare to see that exclusively.
  • I had to take out a conversation about Trogdor, which broke my heart. I love Trogdor. But he is a reference the youths of today simply will not recognize.
  • I changed the high school students’ physical paper notebooks to electronic tablets. Most schools have gone 1-to-1 on electronic devices by now. Pens and pencils are the way of the past.
  • One of the main characters, Nicolette, got a part on a TV show. But streaming wasn’t a big thing at the time. Yes, Netflix and Hulu existed, but it would still be several years before people started “cutting the cord” entirely. So I updated it to her getting a part on a streaming show.

So that’s that…

Now I have to begin the arduous and cringey process of combing through the archives of this blog and unpublishing the posts that are not fit for human consumption.
